Tourism in South Indian cities like Mysore is booming and many foreigners seem to prefer the laid back vibes here which are absent in the hectic crowded megacities in the north. Plenty of 3-star hotels in Mysore and magnificent places like Talakadu help attract tourists too. Here is a brief overview of Talakadu near Mysore:

History: Talakadu was the seat of power to kings of the Ganga and Chola dynasties and mentions of the city have been found that date back to the 11th century. Legend has it the city had many more temples but they were destroyed in natural disasters over the years.

Fascinating architecture: The temples at Talakadu have similar architecture to what you will observe throughout South India but peculiarly they are covered in sand. Ancient temples dot the landscape and many stone pillars can be seen scattered throughout the region.

Panchalinga Darshan festival: Usually held between October and November, the Panchalinga Darshan festival is when Talakadu really comes to life. Pilgrims from all over the country visit to take a holy bath in the teertha at Gokarna before worshipping Kirtinarayana.

How to reach: If you are staying at hotels near Mysore Palace, reaching Talakadu shouldn’t be a problem as its just 25 km away and easily accessible by road. Only bus transportation is available near the temple and no railway stations are located in the vicinity.

Located on the banks of the river Kaveri, the place gets its name from two ancient local chieftains and the temple here is believed to be hundreds of years old.
