Known as the "Cultural Capital of
Southern India'' for its deeply rooted traditions and secular heritage, Chennai
also has a young heart. Winner of recognition when, in 1639, Francis Day and
Andrew Cogan, agents of the English company of India, acquired a strip of land,
called ChennaPatnam on the lease of the King of Vijayanagar.
Fort St. George, which serves as a government secretariat today, was built to create a plant serving as a core for British colonies. The city was known as Madras until 1996 and then renamed Chennai. Today, this floating metropolis is a mixture of the old and new, the traditional and the modern. Distributed more than 200 Square Kms with Bay of Bengal to its east, the city is the gateway to the rest of South India.
